How much energy does driving take?

We know a lot about miles per gallon, but how does that compare to electricity use?

I (Soren) saw a Prius today that had license plate "33KW". 44 horsepower (smaller than pretty much any car engine) is ~33 KW. That much energy for two hours is an entire month's electric bill at my house. But clearly maximum output is not the normal case for these engines. So there are some conversions to be tried!
